Bandi 2025 FFC Ricerca: 70 nuove proposte per fare la differenza nella ricerca sulla fibrosi cistica

L’edizione 2025 dei bandi della Fondazione per la ricerca sulla fibrosi cistica si è chiusa il 31 gennaio con l’arrivo di 70 progetti: 58 in risposta al bando classico di FFC Ricerca e 12 al bando Gianni Mastella. Quest’ultimo, della durata di tre anni, vede cinque progetti relativi alla versione Starting Grant, rivolta ai ricercatori under 40, mentre sette proposte di ricerca sono l’esito del Research Fellowship, rivolto agli under 33.

Nel bando FFC Ricerca, 22 progetti hanno richiesto un finanziamento triennale, che prevede fino a 200.000 euro di budget, 26 progetti hanno fatto richiesta per un biennio, con un budget fino a 130.000, e 10 progetti un solo anno, con un budget limite di 70.000 euro.

I due bandi si contraddistinguono per identiche priorità nelle aree di ricerca: studi e terapie innovative per correggere il difetto di base, terapie personalizzate, infezione delle vie respiratorie, infiammazione nella fibrosi cistica e ricerca clinica ed epidemiologica.
In entrambi i bandi, l’infezione respiratoria in fibrosi cistica è l’area che vede la maggioranza di progetti ricevuti, con trentacinque proposte complessive. Sono invece sei gli studi pervenuti nell’area delle terapie personalizzate, con l’obiettivo di individuare possibili strategie per chi è ancora orfano di terapia anche dopo l’ingresso dei modulatori. A questi, si aggiungono ventidue progetti complessivi sullo studio della fisiopatologia della proteina CFTR, la cui mutazione è causa della malattia. Le proposte di ricerca sull’infiammazione prevenute a seguito delle due call sono 12, mentre l’area dell’epidemiologia e della ricerca clinica vede cinque progetti complessivamente.

La presenza di unità straniere è arrivata quest’anno a dieci, di cui tre extraeuropee, rappresentando il 6% delle unità di ricerca complessive che prendono parte come unità principale o come unità partner nelle application pervenute. Sul totale delle 123 unità di ricerca che partecipano al bando, il 72% è parte di progetti multicentrici, mentre i progetti monocentrici sono il 28%. La composizione di genere vede, in totale, il 54% di partecipanti maschi e il 46% di femmine. L’età media è di 51 anni per il bando classico e di 34 e 30 anni per le due versioni del bando Gianni Mastella.

Il processo di selezione dei progetti pervenuti vede ora l’avvio della prima fase di verifica amministrativa rispetto alle richieste delle due call, cui seguirà, nei prossimi mesi, la valutazione del Comitato scientifico FFC Ricerca sulla qualità e priorità rispetto al successivo invio ai referee internazionali. L’iter di valutazione si concluderà alla fine di giugno o ai primi di luglio con la riunione in plenaria del Comitato scientifico, che deciderà quali progetti verranno finanziati per il periodo 2025-2028 e che prenderanno avvio il prossimo 1° settembre, quando saranno altresì disponibili per le adozioni.

FFC Ricerca 2025 Calls: 70 New Proposals to Drive Progress in Cystic Fibrosis

The 2025 edition of the calls for proposals by the Italian Cystic Fibrosis Research Foundation closed on January 31, receiving a total of 70 project submissions: 58 in response to the FFC Ricerca main call and 12 for the Gianni Mastella call. The latter, which spans three years, includes five projects under the Starting Grant category, aimed at researchers under 40, while seven research proposals fall under the Research Fellowship category, dedicated to researchers under 33.

For the FFC Ricerca call, 22 projects requested three-year funding, with a budget of up to €200,000; 26 projects applied for two-year funding, with a maximum budget of €130,000; and 10 projects sought funding for a single year, with a budget cap of €70,000.

Both calls share the same research priorities: innovative studies and therapies to correct the underlying defect, personalized treatments, infections, inflammation, and clinical and epidemiological research. Among these areas, respiratory infections in cystic fibrosis received the highest number of submissions, with 35 proposals in total. Meanwhile, six studies were submitted in the field of personalized therapies, focusing on strategies for patients who remain without effective treatment even after the introduction of modulators. Additionally, 22 projects are dedicated to studying the pathophysiology of the CFTR protein, whose mutation is responsible for the disease. Research proposals on inflammation totaled 12, while clinical and epidemiological research saw five project submissions.

This year, 10 research units from foreign institutions participated in the call, including three from outside Europe, representing 6% of the total research units involved, either as lead institutions or as partners in the submitted applications. Out of the 123 research units participating, 72% are involved in multicenter projects, while 28% are single-center studies. In terms of gender distribution, 54% of participants are male, and 46% are female. The average age is 51 for the main call, while for the two categories of the Gianni Mastella call, it is 34 and 30 years, respectively.

The selection process now moves into its initial phase, consisting of an administrative review to ensure compliance with the requirements of the two calls. This will be followed in the coming months by an evaluation by the FFC Ricerca Scientific Committee, which will assess the quality and priority of the proposals before submitting them to international referees. The evaluation process will conclude at the end of June or early July with a plenary meeting of the Scientific Committee, which will determine which projects will be funded for the 2025-2028 period. The selected projects will officially start on September 1 and will also be presented to our supporters.
